When people talk about gorilla trekking in Rwanda, they usually mention breathtaking views, rare wildlife encounters with mountain gorillas, and luxurious accommodations. But for me, it’s the unforgettable thrill of a (surprise) gorilla punch that steals the show.

I was on a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, a landscape filled with dense green forests and cloud-topped volcanoes. This trek was arranged by Wilderness, a conservation and hospitality company that also manages the luxurious Bisate Reserve, where I was staying. Though the elegant suites, top-notch cuisine, and hot tubs of the lodge are incredible, the real highlight was my unexpected interaction with a young gorilla.

A Gorilla Encounter Like No Other

It happened in an instant—a punch, quick and deliberate, right to my left butt cheek. Before I could process what just happened, my pint-sized attacker scampered off, leaving me standing there in stunned amusement. This mischievous young mountain gorilla had just rolled down the hill, glancing sheepishly at my husband before giving me a quick “tap” on his way back up.

It’s one thing to see gorillas up close, but being playfully swatted by one? That’s an entirely different level of connection with these incredible animals. Our guide explained that young gorillas sometimes exhibit this kind of curiosity when they see humans, as long as they’re given space and respect. Despite the surprise, I was left exhilarated and thankful for this once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

The Magic of Bisate Reserve

The Bisate Reserve, where I stayed during this adventure, is more than a luxurious retreat—it’s a gateway to Rwanda’s stunning landscapes and conservation efforts. Managed by Wilderness, the Reserve was designed with deep respect for the local environment and community. Beyond its spacious villas and the inviting wood-burning hot tubs, every detail is a tribute to Rwandan culture.

As much as I loved the hot showers and cozy fireplaces, I appreciated even more that my stay contributed to the community and conservation work around Volcanoes National Park. Wilderness employs local Rwandans and collaborates with them on reforestation projects. Before I left, I even had the chance to plant a tree—a small shrub with bright yellow flowers—that will hopefully provide food and shade for the gorillas for years to come.

Reflecting on a Memorable Experience

Volcanoes National Park offers visitors an unparalleled glimpse into the world of wild mountain gorillas, an experience that truly stays with you. For an hour, I was just a few feet away from a family of gorillas, watching them eat, play, and interact. But that playful punch from a young gorilla? That turned a memorable trip into an unforgettable one.

The entire stay at Bisate Reserve, with its luxurious amenities and profound commitment to conservation, added an extra layer to the adventure. Rwanda is becoming known for more than its landscapes and wildlife—it’s a story of recovery, growth, and respect for the land and its creatures.

Would I recommend this adventure? Absolutely. Just be ready for anything, even an unexpected “high-five” from one of Rwanda’s most charming residents.
