In a recent incident, Divine Muheto, the reigning Miss Rwanda, was detained for drink-driving and driving without a license. According to Rwandan police, she allegedly damaged public infrastructure and left the scene afterward. The police statement did not specify if anyone was injured in the accident.
This is not the first time Muheto has reportedly been involved in an alcohol-related driving incident. She has not yet made a public statement regarding her arrest. The news of her detainment followed several days of speculation, and police confirmed the details on Tuesday.
Muheto's case is set to be heard in a Kigali court on Thursday, according to a spokesperson for the prosecution.
Divine Muheto rose to prominence in Rwanda after winning the Miss Rwanda beauty pageant in 2022. Since then, however, the competition has been put on hold due to allegations of sexual misconduct against its organizers.
Rwanda has recently tightened its enforcement of traffic laws to reduce road accidents, leading to a significant increase in drink-driving arrests. The penalty for this offense includes a fine of 150,000 Rwandan francs (about $110) and five days in police custody. In 2022, a Rwandan parliament member resigned after being caught drink-driving, reflecting the seriousness with which the issue is now addressed.
Government efforts to enforce stricter traffic regulations have reportedly led to a notable decrease in fatal road accidents across the country.
